CUF is a growing network of private healthcare, formed by 18 hospitals and clinics based in Portugal. However, despite providing a similar service across the group, until now each unit had its own particular environment. The challenge of this project was to create a strong and unique identity to be felt throughout the network. Tucked along the banks of the River Medway in East Farleigh, Kent, stands a striking reminder of Victorian engineering and architectural eclecticism. Built in 1860 by James Pilbrow, this Grade II-listed boiler house is a rare example of Egyptian Revival architecture in Britain – a style that flourished briefly in the mid-nineteenth century, when fascination with the temples of Karnak, Luxor and Edfu – particularly the Temple of Horus – inspired civic and industrial buildings across the country. Originally a mid-terrace Victorian house in poor condition, the building had suffered from a series of ill-conceived extensions that compromised its flow and severed its connection with the garden.
