Cool Climate Landscape Design in Wentworth Falls

Set within the dramatic cool-climate environment of the Blue Mountains, this landscape design project was designed to create a seamless transition between a contemporary mid-century inspired home and the surrounding native bushland. The clients envisioned a garden that felt intrinsically connected to the landscape—where curated plantings met the wild edges of the adjoining bush and where native species blended effortlessly into the designed spaces. An Evolving, Site-Responsive Design From the outset, the clients chose to live in the home for several years before committing to a full design, allowing the garden to evolve organically. This collaborative, long-term approach proved invaluable. Observing the site through multiple seasons... More

Blackheath Landscape Design

When the client moved into this overgrown and neglected property in Blackheath in the Blue Mountains, their vision was clear: create a striking garden with strong street presence, improved light, and functional off-street parking. The site offered great potential but required substantial rethinking to open the landscape, invite sunlight into the front yard, and enhance access throughout the steeply sloped block. Terry Burns A Design Shaped by Elevation and Movement The natural elevation of the home meant steps would be a defining feature of the landscape design. Instead of disguising the grade change, the design embraces it—celebrating movement through a series of landings, small sitting areas, and gentle directional shifts tha... More

Pupunha House

Set on the highest point of a residential community in Manaus, Brazil, and bordering a permanent conservation area, Pupunha House features a landscape design by Hana Eto Gall Landscape that was conceived as a direct dialogue with the Amazon rainforest. The guiding principle was to turn the garden into the true protagonist, softening the boundaries between natural vegetation and built form. The residence itself was designed by Laurent Troost Architectures, with interiors by Chris Coimbra. Joana França Arrival is framed as a sensorial experience: visitors follow a path immersed in tropical vegetation, where large foliage, natural shade, and rich textures create a fresh, humid microclimate. This immersion continues inside the res... More

L'illustration

The project takes place in the building of the former printing house of the newspaper l’Illustration, an iconic witness of the industrial architecture and modernity of the 30’s through its characteristic tower, its linear volumetry punctuated by the two interior courtyards and its red brick facades. The University Sorbonne Paris Nord already occupies the Illustration after several phases of partial rehabilitation carried out over two decades. Florent Mercier 11h45 This last phase gives back to the south facade its monumental and urban character through a total rehabilitation which opens the building towards the semi-circular square of the rue Balzac and the city. The project is consistent with the previous phases while res... More

Galpão Tropical

Located in the historic center of Manaus (AM), the 50m² garden was created for the headquarters of Muiraquitã Arqueologia, connecting a technical area with a lounge space. The design is based on a fresh interpretation of the local industrial typology, aiming to build a landscape that protects, expands, and connects. Joana França The volume of the project was developed in harmony with the architecture. Metal portals with three-dimensional trellises were designed to support climbing plants like Blue Thunbergia (Thunbergia grandiflora) and Passionflower (Passiflora sp). These plants naturally cling to the structure, creating vertical green walls that provide shade and privacy for the interiors. Joana França... More

Snow Hill Wharf

This development has regenerated an under-utilised, contaminated brownfield site, and brings life to the city’s ‘inner ring’ of former employment land. Once the centre of the world’s gun manufacturing industry, Birmingham’s Gun Quarter was identified as an area of opportunity following its 20th Century decline, when a large part was demolished by post-war town planners. The key site issues were the detached location from the city centre, a lack of public spaces, poor quality walking routes, and industrial warehouses with no active frontages. The canal shortcomings included poor lighting, towpath access, and buildings which turn their backs on the watercourse.  The site is located opposite St Chads, the cit... More

Haddo Yard forms part of a series of projects initiated by Arrant Land that seek to explore how a town with a distinct visual identity can be enhanced by adventurous but contextual contemporary design.  David Barbour Having secured planning permission for the scheme, Arrant Land approached Denizen Works to develop the detailed design. An initial design review exercise... More

The new buildings provide a state-of-the-art facility for 250 rural primary school learners from a predominantly farm worker community. The buildings have been designed around sustainability principles, while respecting the cultural heritage of the area. A didactic design approach was followed, whereby these aspects are demonstrated throughout the complex as part of the teaching and educational processes.   The “Anna Zaal” (circa 1927), the first scho...
