In Noord-Scharwoude, an innovative residential community is taking shape, combining an assisted living facility with a children's center. An Integral Child and Elderly Center (ICEC) is being built here. The design aims to bring different generations together under one roof. With shared spaces for care and primary education, the ICEC fosters daily interaction between children and seniors - whether it’s children inviting seniors to a performance, or sharing activities like reading or baking during Dutch celebrations. When a large, monumental department store stands empty in a prime location, what happens next? Following the closures of V&D and Hudson’s Bay in the Netherlands, the city faced the challenge of repurposing this iconic building. Once plagued by outdated infrastructure, poor indoor climate, and space limitations, this secondary school (including modern sports facilities) has been reimagined as a comfortable ansd modern learning environment. The indoor sports facility is part of the new green residential area 'Het Verborgen Geheim,' nestled between the robust Heysehaven and the Eemhavenweg. The garden village of Heijplaat, a nationally protected cityscape, was developed in the 1910s by the director of the Rotterdam Droogdok Maatschappij (RDM). It was purposefully built for RDM workers to live close to their workplace, avoiding the then-long commute from Rotterdam. Heijplaat lies to the south of the Nieuwe Maas, with Eemhaven to the west and Waalhaven to the east. Following a European tender procedure, the plan by LIAG and BAM Utiliteitsbouw, district The Hague, for the development of a fire station and ambulance post on the Petroleumhaven in The Hague was judged the best by the municipality of The Hague. Work started on the building phase in September 2008. The development covered approximately 5,175 m2 and will house eight fire engines and 18 ambulances. The response team for this part of The Hague as well as a number of staff services and office functions for the corps in The Hague will be housed in the multifunctional building.
