In Noord-Scharwoude, an innovative residential community is taking shape, combining an assisted living facility with a children's center. An Integral Child and Elderly Center (ICEC) is being built here. The design aims to bring different generations together under one roof. With shared spaces for care and primary education, the ICEC fosters daily interaction between children and seniors - whether it’s children inviting seniors to a performance, or sharing activities like reading or baking during Dutch celebrations.

A community-centric design
The building integrates daycare, education, and care within a single complex. Each function is housed in its own “home,” surrounding a central area designed for social interaction and communal activities. This vibrant heart of the building includes spaces like a restaurant, workshop, and library, encouraging cross-generational engagement.
The layout is based on the principle of togetherness where possible and separation where needed, ensuring that all users feel safe and welcome. The use of natural materials and soft colors creates a comfortable atmosphere, while clear sightlines and paths reinforce a sense of openness. Everyone is seen and encouraged to participate.
Harmonious with its environment
The design of the ICEC takes inspiration from a village, featuring low-rise buildings, gabled roofs, and traditional brickwork that harmonize with the local architecture. The building’s use of sustainable materials, like 'pretty plastics' on the façade, reflects its community role and environmental focus. The site, with its “land of a thousand islands” concept, includes play areas, utility gardens, and green spaces, all carefully designed for diverse users.

Collaborative vision
This project is a partnership between Horizon Zorgcentrum, Allente, and the Municipality of Dijk en Waard. Together, they are creating a community space that includes 56 care homes and a child center, vital for maintaining local services and supporting intergenerational connections. Together with the Danish architecture firm rum, we are shaping this vision.
