Huygens Lyceum, Eindhoven

Huygens Lyceum in Eindhoven has undergone a complete transformation. Once plagued by outdated infrastructure, poor indoor climate, and space limitations, this secondary school (including modern sports facilities) has been reimagined as a comfortable ansd modern learning environment. With a focus on creating spaces that promote well-being, LIAG designs healthy buildings by prioritizing the overall user experience.

In collaboration with the school, DAT developed the preliminary design, aligning it with Michael Fullan’s 'deep learning' educational concept, which emphasizes project-based and student-centered learning. LIAG  refined this vision, integrating sustainability, user well-being, and functionality at the core of the design.

Creating a healthy and productive learning environment
The primary goal of the Huygens Lyceum project was not only to provide an inspiring space for students but also to create an environment where teachers enjoy working. Research has shown that a high-quality indoor climate - characterized by good air quality, optimal acoustics, and abundant natural light - directly impacts both student performance and staff well-being.

The atrium serves as the heart of the building, a lively meeting place that fosters interaction. With its expansive glass façade and roof, natural light floods the interior, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere. The use of natural materials, such as wood and plants, enhances the sense of comfort and connection to nature.

Another notable feature is the "learning pit," a versatile space designed for instruction and smaller meetings. This intimate area provides an alternative to the larger auditorium, with wood-clad walls and ceiling, along with decorative plants to further enhance the environment.

Sustainability at its core
Sustainability was a guiding principle throughout the design process. The building integrates a range of visible and invisible measures. A standout innovation is the use of charred bamboo for one of the building’s façades. This biobased material, specially developed for the project, not only meets stringent fire safety standards but also minimizes maintenance requirements.

In addition to the bamboo façade, the building features photovoltaic panels on the roof, a geothermal energy storage system (WKO) below ground, and high-quality insulation. Together with energy-efficient climate control systems, these measures make the Huygens Lyceum nearly energy-neutral.

Climate resilience and green infrastructure
The school’s campus is designed with climate resilience in mind. Several blue-green solutions, such as swales and a water retention pit, have been integrated into the landscape. These features not only support biodiversity but also increase the campus’s resilience to extreme weather events.

The retention pit, in addition to serving as water storage, also acts as a gathering space for students during breaks, much like the "learning pit" inside.
