Perched high above the Arizona desert, Paradise Valley transforms its steep hillside site into a bold architectural composition that follows the contours of the landscape, and opens its multi-layered design towards the valley below. A modern courtyard at the entrance with seating and a water vapor feature provides an atmospheric transition from the street to the private spaces. From a distance, Royal Palm reads as layered planes of stone, wood, water, and glass stepping down a mountainside in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Its modern design extends in a series of horizontal volumes towards the valley below, opening to an infinity-edge swimming pool, and outdoor living spaces for entertaining and resort-style living. At the heart of the design is a light-filled main floor where the kitchen, dining room, living room, bar and wine display share one open plan. The Jacobs Music Center, home to the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, is now a top-tier venue for concerts, comedy shows, corporate events, film screenings, and more. This nearly 100-year-old hall has been beautifully transformed into a modern performance space while preserving its historic charm. Reopened in September 2024, the hall boasts state-of-the-art digital sound and lighting technology that can accommodate up to 1,823 audience members. A magnificent split-trunk live oak has stood guard over the center of this tight lot for decades, and in recent years, thwarted many attempts on capitalizing on the property’s urban proximity and downtown views. After years of vetting home sites across Austin with the client, the architects presented a carefully composed intervention that brought the live oaks into the architectural fold, remaining attentive to their delicate root systems while leveraging their long limbs and lush canopies for shade and privacy. On a plot of just over 1000 m2, in an area of varied and very extensive development, we designed a single-storey house with a simple form and functional interior, offering open and bright spaces open to the landscape of the Podrzeszów hills.
