The clients had two main requests when this project began: first, they wanted to be able to move in as soon as possible, which meant that the extended footprint had to strictly adhere to zoning by-laws in order to expedite the building permit; and second, they wanted to maximize the useful floor space - as a family with a young child, they wanted to accommodate flexibility and room for play, while still ensuring that the house felt composed and ordered.   doublespace photography This dichotomy became the driver for both the organization and language of the home. A strikingly minimal gallery-like space, in a listed building, referencing the tanneries of Dickensian London. Dan Hazeldean Once surrounded by the leather tanneries of Dickensian Whitechapel, this artisan dwelling was originally built as a lodge for a tanner and his family. Designed in 1864 by pioneering architect Henry Roberts and now Grade 2 listed, the lodge gives a rare insight into architecture now scarce in east London. Part derelict by the 1970’s and threatened with demolition, the building was saved, but most original features were removed and modernised. A city retreat inspired by Japanese simplicity and minimalism. Old oak doors on a cobbled back street in Paris, lead up a winding wooden staircase to a dark dusty apartment, uninhabited for nine years.Studio Hazeldean transformed this into a calm oasis in the heart of the bustling city. Dan Hazeldean The design was based on Shibui - subtle understated beauty, and Kanso - simplicity. We used a restrained palette of materials to unify the space and create flow through the apartment. Design Team: Koen Klinkers, Will Galloway, Daniel Yu  First built in the 1970's the apartment was cramped by contemporary standards, even for Tokyo, with low ceilings and short and narrow rooms. After stripping the space down to a single room, the design takes a hint from the overlapping spaces in the city and is composed from three simple shapes. A grey wood box houses the laundry, a concrete box contains the bath and sink, while an S shaped partition forms a closet and space for the fridge.
