This ambitious urban project involves the revitalization of a 5.5-hectare site of the former cavalry barracks of the Polish Army. The site is located in the heart of Poznań, and the entire area, along with four buildings dating from the 19th century, is listed as a historical monument. This concept implements the ideas of the 15-minute city, with a mix of functions allowing for the eventual development of approximately 22,000 square meters of commercial and tertiary functions (offices, retail, gastronomy, services) and 52,000 square meters of housing (about 1,000 apartments). Keeping in mind the institutional nature of the site surrounding and the project brief, the concept – “pool of ideas and loop of feedback”, was evolved. The design revolves around pooling in research minds and creating a loop of feedback for them to benefit from. This idea was further explored by understanding the difference between a ‘study’ and ‘research’. Study happens to be a linear understanding of given information. From former MOAT to FORT, and a new town center This project site lies on the former outer moat of Edo Castle where the shogun lived. The bent section of the moat became the foundation of the current irregularly shaped city block, which was problematic in some respects, with its unusually configured intersection and lack of pedestrian space and greenery. This tendency is clearly visible even today - in light of ever-growing urbanization, the left bank is developing steadily, without considering local context. The Klotski is a three-story, mixed-use infill building situated in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. Close to downtown, the area is noted for its dynamic mix of commercial, manufacturing, and residential uses. Reflecting the eclectic vibrancy and gritty nature of the neighborhood, the 10,041-square-foot CMU and steel-framed building houses a beer hall, an office, a maker space, a studio, and a small caretaker’s apartment.
