Hutton Drive 2641

The Site  As hillside design specialists, the Whipple Russell team sometimes finds it necessary to move mountains – or at least part of one, in order to create a spacious yet intimate modern home. To accomplish these goals for our Hutton house, we first cut into the rear hillside to maximize backyard living space and to site the house further from the street in the front. At the back of the property two porcelain stone retaining walls create a balcony lounge area with a fire pit and greenery overlooking the saltwater pool, spa, and the entire property including multiple firepits, and an outdoor kitchen/bar. An Ipe wood walkway bridge leads from this upper seating into the primary suite.  Adam Latham Adam Latham F... More

Project • By WittehausPrivate Houses

A couple steeped in the Charlotte, NC, art scene had approached their architect Toby Witte of Wittehaus with images of the Netflix series “The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes”. With the need for soaring cantilevers, a desire to enjoy the home when climbing stairs might be at issue, and big eyes and open ears about the process of design, they were ready for their own modern home. Amanda Anderson Together they went on a tour to understand themselves and their needs, dreams, and desires as well as their site, and the potential inherent in the art of architecture itself. Over the course of eight months they talked, sketched, explored, flushed out a long laundry list of practical concerns, and inched ever so careful thr... More

Yeats House

The Yeats House is a spacious modern barnhouse which takes advantage of an irregular lot and a large rear yard. The clients came to BLA Design Group asking for their dream house; a modern yet comfortable home for their growing family. The home needed to serve a young family well; providing a central gathering space that encourages time spent together. Andrew Latreille The irregular site located at the end of a cul-de-sac required a thoughtful approach to the massing and layout of the Yeats House. There are two main building forms connected by a glass hallway; a form for the garage and another for the house. The shape of the site consists of a narrow wedge providing access from the road; this wedge holds the garage form. A large rectan... More

Crestvale Residence

The Crestvale Residence is a single-family home occupying the edge of a large corner lot in South Austin. This position allowed for an ample forecourt at the main entry punctuated by a heritage oak adjacent to the street. The front, side, and rear of the home open to the intermediate landscape at all sides. This intermediate zone consists of a simple grass playscape and is framed by a linear garden running along the property line consisting of both food and medicinal gardens in support of the owner’s business as an herbalist and wildcrafter. Chase Daniel The residence adheres to a simple volumetric diagram where a dark, stucco-clad, two story, rectangular massing is intersected by three secondary volumes clad in rubble format ma... More

Wellfleet Modern Home

Skylight House

This modernist brick home built in 1979 stands in playful contrast to its neighboring historic row homes. The new owners wanted a total renovation with an open floor plan filled with natural light as well as a new third floor addition with a master suite, spa-like bathroom, and sundeck. Program requirements included five bedrooms, contemporary kitchen, children’s play space, media room and ample space for art.   The objective of new design becomes clear upon entry to the home–capturing sunlight. Unique for a city lot, the footprint of the house repeatedly steps back from the south property line, forgoing square-footage for views of the sun and sky. To maximize use of space, every inch was carefully considered. For example... More

Admiral House

The project is located in the city of Los Angeles a few miles from Venice Beach, in a neighborhood called Mar Vista that has been growing substantially in the last decade due to its privileged location of being between the Pacific Ocean coast and Downtown Los Angeles.   The project is located in a traditional sector where you can find various examples of what constitutes the single-family house style in Southern California. New urban developments are changing the morphology of these traditional areas, presenting an overall chaotic vision of contrast between ultra-modern styles and the traditional characteristics of the existing homes. A high percentage of these new developments encompass the trend "box type house design" or houses in... More

Maternal House( خانه مادری )

This contemporary apartment was designed to replace an old childhood home. Despite the limitations in the design of the plan and its inability to create a nostalgic atmosphere, we tried to design the facade of the structure’s corner with playful rainbow colored highlights woods, rusted bars, these colorful windows appears to be a painting for children and infants from the old home reminiscent of sweet childhood times. Preston Hollow Residence

The Preston Hollow residence was designed for a couple seeking a new home for their growing art collection. Located on an unusually shaped lot of just over 1 acre in the Preston Hollow neighborhood of Dallas, the home is sited to maximize the views from the home and create a vanishing point to the horizon from the primary living spaces. These views are framed by a series of exterior and interior planes that allow the landscape to extend from exterior to interior. Located toward the back of the lot the house creates a courtyard of privacy with the lawn and pool terrace as the backdrop, and in doing so creates long views from the front of the home, creating the feeling of an expansive landscape. Buffered by the landscape on the sweeping edge o... More
