Xujiahui Apartment

The project involves the interior renovation of a high-rise apartment located in a landmark urban complex in Shanghai's Heng-fu Historic District. This residence offers accessible urban living and scenic views. However, it also features an "atypical residential layout" characteristic of 1990s housing for overseas buyers: an L-shaped plan with both ends facing west and north, including one bedroom, two bathrooms and a relatively deep living room. The beautiful views of the Heng-fu area balance the downsides of the layout, leading the owner to hope for a design that brings in the cityscape while providing a flexible and spacious social space. rennovation BUDÉ  project reinterprets one of the apartments of the BUDÉ HOUSING ESTATE, a housing complex designed by Georges Addor and Jean-Jacques Honegger in the early 1960s. alberto moncada This concept aims to respond to the ongoing debate on contemporary living and the criticalities around domestic space design, with a revolutionary approach to improve its functional rigid scheme. alberto moncada Internal partitions have been replaced by walk through joinery and movable panels. The use of full-height doors enhances the spatial continuity between the two former distinct areas of the house. alberto moncada These two solutions result in a multifunctional space that emphasizes the panoramic views and... the mill at the edge of the forest

The old mill building dates back to 1914 and has been adapted several times before. It is located at the transition from meadow to forest in a ditch next to a stream. The existing building was not sufficiently lit and the connection to the surroundings was not established. Martin Konzett Our approach was to strengthen and reorganize the existing rooms with careful interventions. It was essential to formulate the new interventions clearly legible and not to hide the static supports of the existing building. The character of the existing is strengthened by the contrast with the new. The scenic surroundings, the threshold between forest and hill country, can also be experienced. Martin Konzett The studio of the sculptor Caroline Go... More

multimedia chapter house

The "Medienhaus Kapitelsaal" is in the historic center of Salzburg, directly under the Fortress in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The starting point for the intervention was an event hall that no longer corresponded to the state of the art and had to be adapted into a multifunctional media house. Julian Höck Julian Höck The approach was to leave the historic building as intact as possible. Nevertheless, the external appearance is inviting and transparent, and the visual relationships to the urban structure are to be established. Inside, the suspended ceilings of the existing hall were removed to be able to add another floor. These are suspended from the existing concrete girders on tie rods and the concrete ceiling was... BORA wing

High-rise office buildings from the 1950s to 70s which show their age and attrition are ordinarily viewed as “sorespots” nowadays, i.e. something which ought to be torn down. But demolition and subsequent new construction are not a  sustainable solution, since they demand an enormous wastage of resources. Willi Bruckbauer didn’t just invent the well known BORA ceramic glass cooktop flue himself, complete with imperceptible ventilation of cooking fumes, but also  acquired this office complex destined for demolition and sponsored a competition which Lorenzateliers then won. Criteria for this distinction were: substantiality, sustainability and feasibility. And above all else, the new architecture needed to correspo... More

Stuyvesant Street Townhouse

A 4 Story townhouse within the St. Mark’s historic district of the East Village was substantially renovated for a family within a short period of time. A successful project outcome followed a positive collaboration between our studio, the client and the project contractor, Think Construction. Ty Cole The project focus was the parlor floor where a central kitchen was created, flanked by a dining room on one side and a living room on the other. A large opening was created in the rear wall, where a tri-fold steel and glass door was installed. Ty Cole The historic stair was restored, with the exception of a stair segment in front of the new window wall, where a new steel stair was introduced to maximize light and visibility th... More

Renovation of Amsterdam UMC Towers

This summer the Amsterdam UMC opened the first units in the newly renovated towers of patient rooms on the AMC site. The renovation of the towers is the most radical change since the monumental concrete hospital opened in 1983. The original design by Dick van Mourik and Marius Duintjer has been left as intact as possible in the process. The outdated nursing units have been thoroughly modernized by EGM architects and Wiegerinck architects.  © Hanne van der Woude Space for personal nursingWith the renovated units, Amsterdam UMC is adding further substance to the ‘central role for the patient’ theme. This means that the wishes of patients are taken on board in the choices and decision-making process concerning treat... More

Villa West

An abandoned former war period sports building (constructed in 1940’s) was never intended to be renovated. Real estate developers thought of demolishing it as no one would imagine making anything useful out of it. However, the client bought the site and decided to turn the 'useless' building into a private villa.  Tim Van De Velde Converting this space into a livable environment presented a special challenge and made this project a unique experience.  The work started by dismantling the original structure. An inspirational moment came when walls and ceiling were stripped bare and the raw beauty of the original materials was revealed, which in combination with the vast space filled with light presented a great point of... The Water Tower

The tower was in need of refurbishment and restoration, having been converted into a residential property many years ago it was now a little unloved and tired. There were two aspects of the brief, there was the consolidation of weatherproofing to the building, as it had suffered from rain ingress and dampness. The second part of the brief was to convert the space into a cosy retreat, for the clients to relax and unwind in.  The six-month restoration stripped away doors, partitions, and thick, almost medieval window frames that had been added over the years to emphasize the building’s historic brickwork. Panes by two companies, Crittall and Smart Windows, were installed to maximize natural light and improve thermal performance.... More

175 Park Avenue

KPF transformed an existing Verizon call center into a headquarters for a young, cutting-edge company by pulling nature directly into the office environment, creating a state-of-the-art workspace that is intimately connected to its surroundings. KPF’s strategy cut the central third out of the existing building to create a series of open-air courtyards. The central courtyard divides the building into two parallel office bars, or wings, whose ends face the parking space. A central connector, the lobby space, is conceived of as an architectural promenade leading to the third floor by way of an ornamental stair sequence. In the design of the outdoor spaces, KPF collaborated with renowned landscape architects Nelson Byrd Woltz. The court... More

Every room uses this color scheme differently, depending on the function of each space. But one thing that is constant is that the renovation is mixing between function and aesthetics  The overall style of the apartment is minimalist modern with an overwhelming artistic feel. More

Tierwelthaus

The name Tierwelthaus, or ‘Wildlife House’ evolved from the unique relationship between the home and the land. A heavily used deer trail passes into the canyon to the north and a screech owl who had taken up quarters within the structure during construction now frequents the property. A pair of bobcats regularly patrol the yard, while birds and small creatures alike have built homes in the encompassing terrain.  Previously acquired in a bankruptcy settlement, Tierwelthaus underwent a minor remodel and a changing of hands before becoming the current clients’ forever home. The previous owner was interested only in exterior “touch up” and a modest remodel of the top floor. When the house was transferred into... More
