Designed by Francesco Pierazzi Architects, Sawtooth House transforms an ageing rear extension to a Victorian property in Kingston upon Thames, south-west London, into a more energy-efficient and adaptable family home. Rather than pursuing substantial additional floor area, the project adds only 15 square metres to the existing building while undertaking a broader retrofit of the original house. Inspired by an ephemeral bliss experienced in a South Indian temple complex, this moment is poetic—a setting sun visually diminishing the density of the stone, creating an intangible relationship with the material. The clients, a couple from the Paris region planning to retire in the south of France, approached the agency for their new home. The house will serve as their primary residence and also offer a seasonal rental activity. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all communications and design discussions with the clients were conducted via video call, which was an unusual but successful approach. Breaking free of a typical development pattern, this family home is situated towards the rear of the site, allowing the ground floor living spaces to open onto the expansive front lawn and connect to the park beyond. The dense trees create a canopy of privacy and shade within which the organic, sweeping forms of the upper level of the house appear to float. The dappled light through these trees has been playfully interpreted and exaggerated within the rooms through the introduction of custom-perforated, operable screens. Throughout the interior design the curved forms continue with the softening of the stairs, walls, and cabinetry in a palette of natural materials and muted tones.   A new off-grid house makes geometric allusions to the clients’ love of the abstract formal qualities of modernist houses by Myron Goldfinger and Charles Gwathmey. Based on a 4m x 3.8m structural grid, the design pin-wheels a series of private and public rooms around a central courtyard to provide a modest internal floor area of 100 sqm with a low environmental footprint of only 129 sqm on the site. National House is a new modestly sized two-storey skinny house for a young family of four. The design makes geometric and elemental references to the neighbouring development of its immediate context while also alluding to the formal qualities of various compact housing types in Japanese, Dutch and Belgian inner urban neighbourhoods. A new two-storey split-level house on a waterfront site cascades a series of private and public rooms in response to its steeply sloping site, landscape setting, and harbour views. The building is located in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. The building rising with 2-storey masses lying horizontally and the glass-covered floors between them, created a contrast with the vertical boxes that came out of the console opposite to the horizontal. The dynamic relationship formed by horizontal and vertical masses created a sense of movement in different directions in the structure. 5 vertical boxes in the building gave the building an architectural identity by making a console with a height of 3 floors. The commercial floors on the ground floor and 1st floor have defined the entrance area to the building with the shell extending to the boundary of the plot and have been decomposed in size from the upper apartment volumes.
