Located a short walk from a contemporary residence designed by Cimaise in 2011, this agricultural building extends the owners’ living project into the landscape, anchoring it in a simple volume set at the edge of the forest. It reprises the rigor and material palette of the neighboring house while asserting its own presence through the composition of a timber volume housing the garage and a long glazed greenhouse facing the view, its base marked by a corten steel planter. On a quiet street in Bloomsbury, this project returns two Grade II listed buildings back to a single house after being used as publishers’ offices since 1974. The project places a room, shared by both buildings, in the reinstated garden. The new element sits on the slab and foundations of a former utility building which was built to serve the offices when they were converted. Demolition of the service building results in the best-preserved window being revealed to the garden and mews for the first time in almost fifty years. This project entails the adaptation and extension of a heritage-listed flax threshing hut located in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. The client brief required that the existing stone construction, dating back to the 18th century, be upgraded into a fully functional country home. In close dialogue with the local heritage authorities, a strategy was developed to keep the original building fabric as intact as possible while accommodating complementary functions in a new low-slung volume which at first glance is perceived as a separate and autonomous construction. Hitachi City stretches along the Pacific coast and is the birthplace of the global HITACHI Group. The site is located in Nakazato, a district of Hitachi City, but can only be reached from the city center by crossing a mountain. The area was incorporated into Hitachi City because it once housed company housing for workers of Hitachi Mine, the predecessor of HITACHI. However, the Hitachi Mine is now gone and the Nakazato area is a lonely mountain village. After a long tiring search through catalogs for their ideal home, a young family approached Papundekl architects with their vision. They found the layout of the catalogue houses impractical and uneconomical. The basic task for the architects was a one-storey barrier-free bungalow and a layout with a minimum amount of corridors, all with regard to low overall costs.
