The project honors the original 1903 townhouse, while embracing a clean, contemporary vision to open up channels for natural light, in pursuit of framed compositions nested one into the other. This is a ground up townhouse in the Upper West Side of New York City. We dug down 18' into bedrock to create space for a basketball court, high def golf simulator, gym and home office below the house, and built a new, 5-story townhouse on top. It features 10′ and taller ceilings on every floor, elevator, and rooftop terrace. The ground floor windows and entry doors are set within a deep limestone base, and the upper facade is buff brick with projecting window lintels and sills in zinc. Situated in the heart of the city, this seventeenth-century corner house offers views of two Amsterdam canals. At the request of the owners, the designated state monument has been modernized and made more sustainable. Serge Schoemaker Architects transformed the five-floor home into a new visual composition that enhances the historical qualities of this remarkable building to the full. This project involves a complete gut renovation of an existing 4-story townhouse, along with the addition of a fifth floor and a 12-foot rear extension. Our clients, who had previously lived in a downtown loft, sought to recreate a similar open and airy feel for their new Upper East Side townhouse. In response, we designed a vertical loft that offers a dynamic, modern living experience, contrasting with the traditional horizontal layout they were accustomed to. Our clients, a young couple with three children, envisioned a home that felt both open and airy, yet still intimate. To bring this vision to life, we reimagined the layout to maximize natural light and carefully selected materials that foster warmth and harmony.
