A modernist-style church in Brasilia embodies the city’s original Pilot Plan

ARQBR Arquitetura e Urbanismo has designed the Church of the Holy Family as part of an urban extension of the city of Brasilia. The project’s architectural concept centers on the relationship between spirituality, nature, and community. Joana França Joana França In 1957, Brazilian architect and urban planner Lúcio Costa’s entry for the urban design of Brazil’s new federal capital was chosen in a national competition. Costa’s “Pilot Plan” (Plano Piloto) for the city of Brasilia, located in the country’s hinterland, was in the shape of an irregular cross, analogous to an airplane or dragonfly. BOATYARD AT CULLY

The little town of Cully is known for its jazz festival and its magnificent landscape of vineyard terraces overlooking Lake Geneva – yet it is, at the same time, a port and fishing area, as evidenced by the new boatyard which opened in the spring of 2020. Supported by the municipality, which wanted to preserve this traditional activity connected with the lake, the project was developed in discussion with the Lavaux district’s advisory committee, charged with upholding the quality of the built environment in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.   The boatyard is a small-scale facility primarily dedicated to renovating wooden boats. The building comprises three sections under one roof: services and offices over two levels to th... More

Villa Monja

In 2015, architects Nikola Novakovic and Radovan Radoman of Enforma completed the project of renovating the interior of Villa Monja, an 18th-century stone building in the Bay of Kotor. The area has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1979 and therefore subject to the restrictions associated with the conservation of historic buildings. The renovation has exploited the transparency of glass to give a contemporary twist to the building, using it to separate the different areas in the structure without creating visual limitations, and to construct a minimalist staircase and landing in glass and steel. The lightness of these innovative elements contrasts with and elevates the ancient stone walls and wooden structures to give the... More

Ha Long Villa

Vietnam has an abundance of nature and townscapes that are registered as World Heritage Sites. Economic growth due to the increase in tourism has raised the standard of living but has also given way to reckless development by clearing away nature. To tackle this situation, we want to create a house that will connect people and nature. Ha Long, home to Ha Long Villa, is a beautiful coastal city in northern Vietnam, 160 km northeast of Hanoi. It is also home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ha Long Bay. In particular, it is a city abundant with local industries such as fisheries and coal mining, and it is a region that is rapidly developing alongside its tourism industry. The site is near the coast and overlooks Ha Long Bay with a landsca... More

SHIRASU/Sakurajima

Modern architecture has three established branches: design, structure and equipment. In recent years where environmental consideration has become a prerequisite in designing new buildings, an increased number of efforts to review regional characteristics are being put into design and equipment. However, such efforts have not yet reached the branch of structure, and buildings are usually designed based on common reasonability when structure was environmental architecture in and of itself before Modernism—a branch principally based on regional characteristics.   The site is located in a residential neighborhood covering the hilltop overlooking Sakurajima. To our surprise, an American owner asked us for a sustainable residence usi... More

The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been a popular holiday destination for international holidaymakers for decades, both in summer and in winter.  Since its construction in the 1960s, the house has undergone countless structural extensions, modernizations and restructurings, but in 2019, as part of a core renovation, it was time to give the main building – including reception, bar and dining room, as well as the wellness area – a uniform design and an architecturally contemporary appearance.  The existing balconies and wooden cla...
