Mount Saint Mary's University Campus Center

The problem was reverberation. The newly renovated Campus Center at Mount Saint Mary’s University’s Chalon Campus, Los Angeles, CA, a 4700 square-foot multipurpose event space, was plagued by echoey acoustics that interfered with audibility in the room. The solution turned out to be a simple replacement of the hard ceiling panels with lightweight thermoformed acoustic panels. The Campus Center space had several lives since construction of the Humanities Building, designed by Bark & Ott and completed in 1966. The space was originally the Commuter Lounge, a Mid-Century Modern living room for students that did not live on campus and needed a place to gather between classes. As the only large meeting space on the campus without... More

Paris Nanterre University

The interplay between colour, light and material is the outstanding design element with which the architects Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières gave a new lease of life to the previously dark, colourless and empty recreation rooms at Paris X-Nanterre University. Particular importance was attached to the careful choice of lighting.Timelessly elegant ceiling luminaires, whose classical cylindrical shape combined with high-quality hand-blown opal glass is impressive, enhance the conference and auditorium areas. The light is given off smoothly and uniformly to the environment. The arrangement of the luminaires in lines creates a foil to the round arrangement of the seating, thus conveying an exciting contrast.Parts of the faça... More

From the need to modernize the space occupied by the department of pre-university attention of the Anáhuac Mayab University, a much more flexible and dynamic work model, in accordance with the changes that this department has undergone in recent years. In order to reflect the culture of innovation of the institution, a concept was created that projects an attractive and representative work dynamic; able to guide and receive future students.  The first step of the process was to clean the space of all non-essential elements leaving only the structural supports, this will improve the architectural program in a flexible way, but at the same time respecting the compositional axes of the building.  The architectural program meet... Community Center at Mount Holyoke College

Our collaboration with Mount Holyoke began as a feasibility study of centralizing their five residential dining facilities. While the concept proved both financially and physically feasible, the cultural and trustee approval feasibility proved more complicated. Following several months of research, workshops, and consensus-building, the project emerged as a reimagined community center that combines a variety of co-curricular, social, student services, and dining spaces in the center of campus. The historic Blanchard Hall structure, formerly the campus gymnasium, is organized on three programmatic levels, connected by a sun-filled central atrium. The entry-level reinvents the original basketball court as a new “campus lobby” or... More

Kashmir University Law Faculty

The building design has a large glass front, that blurs the lines between inside and out, and all academic and faculty facilities are planned around a central atrium. The primary staircase abuts the atrium space, and, apart from being a functional design, ends up being an all weather “social space”.The building is naturally ventilated, for keeping it cool during the warm season. However, the high performance glazing and UPVC fenestration system allows the building to be used in cold weather also, without being air-conditioned.Steel PEB is the primary structural framing, and deck slabs are provided for all floors. The external envelope is made from insulated double wall brick work, procured locally. More

Anglia Ruskin University

“The blue copper effectively gave the closest visual match to a natural patinated copper in our opinion – without the 25-year wait for the weather to do the job for us.” Richard Murphy Architects have created a new campus for Anglia Ruskin University, announced by a dramatic curved façade clad in tiered layers of blue-coloured pre-patinated copper. The three buildings comprising the new campus (built by principal Design and Build contractors R G Carter Cambridge Ltd.) share the same external facing brickwork, structured by dark metal detailing. In contrast, vertical standing-seam cladding in pre-patinated copper accentuates the curved facades of the lecture theatre. Richard Murphy Architects’ Director J... More

The Curve Building, Teesside University

The heart of Teesside University’s campus in Middlesbrough is defined by Nordic Royal golden copper alloy, enveloping the new Teaching and Conference Building – known as ‘The Curve’. The Curve forms part of Austin-Smith:Lord’s competition-winning design for a unique environment at the centre of the University. It includes an extensive public realm, innovative lighting, a living wall with giant LED screen and landscaping across the newly pedestrianized campus. This new ‘Campus Heart’ aims to rival any new university in the country or indeed Europe. The new building’s teaching block and 200-seat auditorium are linked and expressed by a curved façade that wraps around the north, east and... More

Kashmir University New Admin Block

Client’s Brief: Kashmir University in Srinagar is one of the oldest and most respected institutions of higher learning in the valley. The University has grown in size and stature over the years, and a need was felt to create an administrative hub, which could accommodate the office of the Vice Chancellor, the Registrar and Deans, apart from the administrative heads such as Finance and Accounts, Estates and Development and various other administrative functions.   The University wanted a building that was respectful of the vernacular language, and yet a high fit and high performance contemporary building. They wanted a building that would utilise current trends in open work culture, natural light, informal interaction spaces an... More

Tata Hall for the Sciences

The interdisciplinary Tata Hall for the Sciences, designed by CO Architects, increases research capacity at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego), and provides a new hub for teaching and scholarly engagement.  The 130,000-square-foot, seven-floor building combines research and teaching from two different departments, biology and chemistry.  Recognizing that many scientific breakthroughs occur through interdisciplinary collaboration, UC San Diego required research labs to be designed to encourage interaction, with work benches grouped together in an open area, rather than in separate spaces, which is common in typical lab layouts.  Specialized research procedure rooms are situated at the ends of the building t... Youth Center

The proposal provides state of the art facilities for exhibition space, conference and performance hall, workshop studios, research and administrative offices, library. The building sits at the edge of a cliff and it is mainly surrounded by uncultivated ground. Design challenge is to provide peculiar spaces for the new functions within a one level system covered by a natural roof while the curving glass of the facade helps the building to recede visually. A full-height atrium forms the focus of the building. It links the different levels visually, creating a feeling of spaciousness. Natural lighting is used to dramatic effect the exhibition space, hall classrooms and offices. More

Nicholson Dining Commons

Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU), a faith-based liberal arts college, wanted to revive its existing Nicholson Dining Commons to reflect an updated modern dining experience that would meet the needs of the campus for the next twenty years. They sought to provide a comfortable and attractive place to eat, study, collaborate, and build long lasting relationships. With limited options on and off campus for dining and meeting, the importance of providing this space for their 3,500 students was amplified. Some of the university’s objectives were to increase their seat count, expand outdoor usage, and improve their oversized and underutilized lounge area. Nicholson Commons was designed upon the belief that the best conversations happen... More
