The Sport and Examination Centre (SETC) Leiden is a multifunctional, future‑oriented facility designed by RoosRos Architecten in cooperation with BINX Smartility. Located in the heart of the Leiden Bio Science Park, the new centre brings together a wide range of sports activities, study environments, and examination functions in a single coherent building. Its construction launched with a festive event that highlighted the dynamic and inclusive character the centre aims to embody.
The SETC responds to the university’s need for a building that accommodates both daily sports practice and the logistical requirements of large‑scale examinations. The program includes two full‑size competition halls with tribunes, a spacious fitness area, a spinning room, three dance studios, a body‑and‑mind room, hospitality spaces, and support facilities for outdoor sports fields. These diverse functions are arranged on a clear and efficient floor plan, ensuring smooth circulation and optimal acoustic separation—an essential condition for combining sports and exams within one building.
A distinctive architectural feature is the publicly accessible rooftop. Positioned at the front of the building, this roof extends the campus landscape and provides opportunities for recreation, outdoor workouts, and informal study breaks. The fitness area connects directly to this elevated exterior space, creating a seamless transition between inside and outside. This design move supports the university’s goal of promoting movement and social interaction across campus.
Flexibility is central to the concept. During daytime, the halls can be rapidly configured as high‑capacity examination rooms, while after 17:00 if necessary, they can transform back into sports facilities. Additional multi‑purpose rooms allow students to prepare, meet, or rest between activities, making the building a versatile hub for both academic and social life.
Sustainability plays a defining role. The SETC has an open architectural expression and integrates greenery into both the façade and the roof, contributing to biodiversity and climate adaptation. RoosRos emphasizes that the building stimulates both body and mind and is designed to support not only current users but also future generations at the Bio Science Park.
Façade systems by ArcelorMittal Building Solutions – Specials
For the façade, the project uses advanced steel façade systems supplied by ArcelorMittal Building Solutions – department Specials, known for their custom‑made architectural profiles. This system, Creneo Block 40, is delivered in 3 different types which are randomly installed to create this beautiful facade. Combined with the Hairexcel 60mu coating in dark blue metallic color, code Marine 6542.
ArcelorMittal Specials develops distinctive, tailor‑made façade solutions—such as their Creneo, Eclectic, and Isis series—which enable architects to create unique geometries, varying depths, and expressive rhythmic patterns across the building envelope. These systems can be produced in different materials, colours, and coatings, offering architects great design freedom while meeting strict technical and thermal requirements.
ArcelorMittal’s façade products are engineered for durability, precision, and aesthetic flexibility. They provide options for perforated or non‑perforated elements, hidden or visible fixings, and a wide range of surface finishes. This aligns closely with the SETC’s architectural ambition to create an inviting, open, and contemporary identity that fits within its campus environment. With more than 30 years of experience in high‑performance cladding systems, ArcelorMittal’s Specials department supports projects through technical guidance and customized design development, contributing to a façade that is both resilient and visually expressive.
