Shared Roof is a multifunctional housing project for multiple families in Seattle's Phinney Ridge neighborhood, which no longer considers housing as a collection of isolated units, but as a structure for coexistence. Designed by Johnston Architects (JA), the project responds to rising housing costs, social fragmentation, and environmental pressures by prioritizing community, resource efficiency, and long-term livability. Park Residence is a residential building located in the heart of Sofia, between the vibrant city center and the serene expanse of Holy Trinity Park. This prime location brought a unique set of challenges for the architectural team: designing a building that is both visually engaging and functionally efficient, integrating the building into the urban environment, and fostering a harmonious connection with the park. To accommodate a large busy family, this semi-detached house was expanded into its twin, creating a much larger home while allowing for the future re-division of the building into two homes again. From the street, this expansion is discrete, maintaining the original streetscape and scale. On entering, views through the house open up - the scale shifts, the orientation changes to focus on a central courtyard and materials become more robust as the building merges with its garden. On a deep and narrow lot in Vienna’s 5th district, an urban void was closed by a two-tiered residential building. Its defining feature is a carefully proportioned concrete framework facade, with expansive floor-toceiling windows that let daylight enter deep into the building. Along Stolberggasse, the streetside volume contains 14 apartments on eight floors of roughly square shape. Its courtyard-side counterpart houses a total of 13 apartments on seven floors. Both are crowned by fully glazed and setback top floors, which form the upper levels of an array of maisonette apartments.
