The Renovation of A House in Sils Maria

The project involves the renovation of part of a residential building in the square of Sils Maria that was originally a farmhouse. The recesses corresponding to the corners of the original stableare still visible and the project has restored the memory of its upright planks with stripsof larch and masonry. The house was ‘gutted’ preserving the external walls, insulated on the outside with a coating of plaster, and the still visible roof structure. It was re-partitioned with new cement slabs, a new staircase and the internal divisions necessaryfor the complex reorganization planned for the spaces. The rooms are of modest dimensions, but well-proportioned with loweredceilings and are carefully designed to exploit the available space to the full with niches for wardrobes and beds.

The choice of finishes creates a sensation of the harmoniousness of the spaces, the floors of the main rooms are in oak parquet, the plastered walls are dark grey while, by way of contrast, the ceilings have a slight sheen created by using white plaster finished with beeswax. The bathrooms are finished in tiles on which a ‘graphic’study incolour and geometrical shapes prevails. The staircase, in solid oak, with a bannister in wood and railings in brass, creates a ‘sculptured’effect and brings out the attention todetail. Everything in this house has been designed, beds, wardrobes and kitchen with the use of carefully selected local materials, lendingit a contemporary and essentially urban feel.
