25 best architecture firms in Taiwan

14 Aug 2024  •  News  •  By Surabhi Patil

The East Asian Island nation of Taiwan has been heavily influenced by its dynamic history as a colony of Japan, China, and the Netherlands, as well as its aboriginal tribes. Traditional Taiwanese architecture reflected the use of locally available materials like wood, bamboo, and clay, suited to the island’s subtropical climate. The Chinese and Japanese colonial periods introduced novel elements; from ornate rooflines, intricate woodwork, and courtyards to reinforced concrete structures with Western and Asian influences. Further, the widespread use of concrete, steel, and glass in the mid-twentieth century, led to Taiwan’s transformation into a multifaceted urban landscape, where diverse styles coexist.

Today, local architecture firms in Taiwan draw inspiration from the island’s complex past and natural surroundings to create contextually responsive structures. The 25 architecture firms selected below define Taiwan’s current architectural discourse by exploring adaptive reuse, ecological and cultural integration, and sustainable practices.
