Marsk Tower, translated as ‘Marsh Tower,’ is a 25-meter-high observation lookout rising from the marshland of Denmark’s National Park, Wadden Sea. In what was a close collaboration between Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and the blacksmiths of Schacks Trapper, the Corten steel twisting double helix form aims to project a natural aesthetic that blends with the natural environment while simultaneously serving as a new, visible destination in Denmark.
‘Because of the earth curvature, visitors will gradually expand their view of the horizon while walking to the top of the tower. On the foot of the tower, you will be able to see 4 km into the distance, but from the top of the tower the view is expanded to an 18m view into the horizon,’ says Jakob Lange, Architect and Partner at BIG.
The design of the observation tower was part of a local partnership with Marsk Camp Group to create an experiential destination that makes one of the last remaining large-scale intertidal ecosystems in the world more accessible to the public but in a sustainable way. The tower is fully wheelchair-accessible with an elevator located at the core of the tower that provides access via the ground level ramp.
