Shanghai-based firm Wutopia Lab introduces a whimsical fantasy into the Miro store of Duoyun Bookstore in Jiangsu, China. Taking inspiration from animated movies, the dreamy bookstore takes one on a spatial journey to neverland.

Incorporating dramatic design elements, the 1700sqm structure boasts a vibrant colour palette and a plethora of symbolic references. The main façade is a playful take on a coastal landscape, showcased by a yellow backdrop reminiscent of wave motion.

An octagonal red-coloured tower sits in the backdrop of the wave, resembling a lighthouse positioned in the harbour. The book tower is accessible via a central, earth-toned staircase that descends two levels of mesmerizing exhibits of white bookshelves. On reaching the first level, users can gaze up at the sloping roof and marvel at its enchanting form of diverging sun rays.

As one exits the tower, an abstract black forest emerges. The dark metal roof, supported by a scattered framework of black metal rods, is interspersed with small holes, allowing partial passage of light and evoking a mystical feel.

Toward the end of the forest awaits a cloud-shaped gate, welcoming the users into another world of whimsy. Creating an impression of floating amongst the clouds, the gradients of white perforated metal and brushed stainless steel panels dominate the space.

Aside from the book tower, a second library area is located directly above the café. Reflecting the theme of space within a space, each section displaying distinct animal-shaped entrances, is wrapped in colourful perforated metal sheets in contrast to the plain white interiors.

The fairy-tale-inspired journey finally comes to an end with the café's outdoor terrace, illustrating a bright red tent with carousel horses in the centre.

Therefore, the design spatially transcends the users into the land of fantasy, mystery and magic.
