Taking the form of a reappropriated American dumpster, the Fandangoe Skip New York is a candy-coloured kiosk installation offering integrated art and mental health program. The project is a collaboration between London-based print artist Fandangoe Kid (Annie Nicholson), SKIP Gallery, The Loss Project, and Caukin Studio. Following a tour in London, the installation has now arrived at Brookfield Place, New York, where it serves Brooklyn’s Blue Marble ice cream as part of the non-pressurized environment it seeks to create.
Driving the concept behind the kiosk is Annie Nicholson of Fandangoe Kid and her experience following the loss of family members in 2011. Her work is inspired by the desire to offer a platform for open dialogue around the taboo subject of grief. The kiosk provides a space for people to share stories and dispel the stigmas that come with loss. Workshops and talks on the subject are also curated within the space by The Loss Project.
The built design of the kiosk was undertaken in collaboration with Caukin Studio, known for its innovative community spaces. The form and layout of the kiosk are split into two main areas; the larger open-sided bench seating, and the internal room. All spaces are designed to host different mental health workshops.
Sustainable materials are used predominantly, with the designers opting for standardized timber products and simple joints to let the stand-out colour scheme and carefully considered form create the artwork.
The result is a celebration of art, collaboration, and connection.
