Prior at Concéntrico 08 is an installation from SKULL studio that loosely connects observations from neuroscientific disciplines with the design of play structures.

Research into the learning process has determined that the effectiveness of learning is multiplied when it occurs outside of one’s comfort zone. Adaptation to new stimuli encourages play, learning, and the even perception of artwork.

In this installation, vibrant colours arranged in an irregular rhythm appear to vibrate alongside a dynamic and unusual combination of forms. The combination generates a reaction that initiates and stimulates the adaptation process of those interacting.

The human brain orients itself within a space upon cues from priors, which can be described as points of anchoring that appear to the senses of vision, hearing, touch, etc. A ‘prior,’ as the installation name includes, forms the foundation for developing a predictive model. Should a discrepancy arise between conception and actual state, a ‘prediction error’ occurs.

This installation is accessible for festival visitors for this year only as construction on a new technology centre by Kengo Kuma will commence this autumn.
