On the Isle of Wight, this family home is perched on an open site with views across the water. A retreat for busy professionals, the design by strom architects aims to bring the family together with a focus on nature and proximity to water activities.

Low in profile, the simple single-storey build takes on a rectilinear form. Every room in the house is oriented to take advantage of views to the north, while living areas feature glazing towards a south-facing courtyard, allowing for light and warmth to penetrate deep into the house.

The main rectilinear form contains an open main living and dining room. A bedroom ‘wing’ leads off from this space. The main bedroom however is kept separate from the other bedrooms and is located at the other end of the living area. Including a deck to the outside, it is a secluded oasis.

Given the site’s waterside location, flood risk posed a design challenge. To address flood risk the floor level has been raised to perch on the high point of the site, which is above the flood risk zone. The house is supported by pillars as the terrain slopes away, creating the look of a volume ‘floating’ above the land below.

Emphasizing the house’s rootedness in nature, mowed paths and wildflowers surround the property.
