In Burriana, Spain, the Piera House by Fran Silvestre Architects celebrates a feeling of transparency while still achieving the desired level of privacy. Appearing as a solid volume that hovers above the diaphanous ground floor, the upper floor is enveloped by a fence-like envelope that creates a veil-like effect for the interiors and terraces space behind.
The introverted composition with clear and simple geometries creates a series of borders and a feeling of privacy. The first border, which differentiates the line between the street and the garden, is a fence that acts as an opaque filter for views The lattice, made of aluminium profiles, allows for light and air with constant materiality in full height. The profiles are angled to prevent views from outside.
This lattice formation is applied also to the upper shell to shield the interior spaces and provide visual continuity. The lattice elements strongly define the overall architecture of the house.
Finally, a rectangular water pond follows the shape of the site to broader the feeling of spaciousness and provide a tranquil environment for the residents.
