Great Wave was drawn out of the concept of developing a work from only one sheet of stainless steel, retaining the perfection of one surface, but manipulating it into an entirely new form. Inspired by the idea of running metal through a mangle, the work developed a ribbon-like curve through its centre, this ‘S’ shaped profile is consistent throughout the length of the work although changing direction to create the functional form of the piece. The flowing sheet of steel changes direction at either end, curling inwards, creating voluptuous curved supporting sides.
Each of the curved manipulations in the steel allow for functionality. The curvature of the legs not only provides the support system, but also cups subtle drawers while the wave shape that runs throughout the piece works as a device to allow for two surface levels. The lower wave of steel creates a worktop complete with gas cooking hob and workspace, which is overlapped by the higher wave of steel offering a fluid bar-height table surface. The sinuous shape invites you to smooth your hands over the cool outline, while the subtle reflective quality of the stainless steel enhances the graceful flowing curves. The work maintains a quiet simplicity, possibly owing to the visual metamorphosis of one complete form evolving into another.
