The centenary Shaughnessy Building in Old Montreal has long combined the charm of la belle époque with a vibrant location, steps from the bustling Old Port, Victoria Square metro station and the downtown core.
The architecture of Lemay’s spectacular extension is an inspired response to the Shaughnessy’s Chicago School composition of base, shaft and capital. It reinterprets these alignments with a subtle play of material transitions in continuity with the existing building and its prestigious surroundings. The all-glass façade of its cut-out on McGill Street counterbalances the mass of the existing masonry volume, its crown reaffirming the style with a contemporary approach.
This INOVA Award-winning project extends the commercial building and hosts a street-level restaurant that reinforces the heritage building’s connection with a bustling thoroughfare.
