"Home is where the art is"—for the client, a Germany-educated art aficionado with a deep admiration for Piet Mondrian and global artifacts, this philosophy wasn’t just a sentiment; it was the cornerstone of design. With this in mind, Uniifyy crafted a 4200 sq. ft. duplex apartment in Central Park, Gurugram, that transforms into a living, breathing homage to Mondrian’s visual language—where every wall, line, and hue reflects a balance between function and fine art.
According to Founders and Principal Architects Asish Batra and Kavita Batra, “The client’s unique interests gave us inspiration to not follow any specific design style but to make the greatest art of Piet Mondrian as the pivot of designing the entire home.” What followed is a space that shifts fluidly between traditional and contemporary, abstract and architectural—serving as a canvas for both creative expression and everyday living.
Geometry in Motion: A Home Inspired by Mondrian’s Mathematical Art
The spatial design is grounded in Mondrian’s core principles—strong vertical and horizontal geometries, pure abstraction, and vivid blocks of flat colour. The interiors translate these concepts into a bold yet serene aesthetic, with carefully composed planes of blues, oranges, and neutrals anchoring the rooms. Solid forms and clean lines define not just walls and floors, but even the flow of natural light and human movement.
The duplex layout is divided across two levels:
Lower level: A public zone housing the living room, office, and guest bedroom, all opening to outdoor pockets filled with planters.
Upper level: A private haven with a master bedroom, music area, kitchen, and a personal lounge, complemented by a spacious terrace designed for conversation and relaxation.
Each level is intricately linked to the outdoors, blurring thresholds and offering a multisensory experience of space.
Art, Antiquity, and Function—All in Dialogue
Upon entry, the living room unfolds like a curated gallery—a microcosm of the entire home. Contemporary artwork, antiques, and hand-picked curios come together in a design language that feels both bespoke and humble. There’s a strong emphasis on functionality, but never at the cost of visual intrigue.
The bedrooms carry this vision forward in contrasting styles:
The guest bedroom on the lower level is expressive, with bold colours, artistic patterns, and warm wooden flooring.
The master bedroom above is quieter in tone, with subdued hues, minimalist design, and refined marble flooring, inviting stillness and reflection.
Material Consciousness and Sustainability
A defining aspect of the home is its conscious material selection—a minimalistic palette of Low-VOC paints, birch plywood, and marble, all sustainably sourced. The restrained use of materials reflects not only environmental awareness but also allows the artistic elements to stand at the forefront.
The result is a design that is aesthetically layered yet environmentally light, combining craftsmanship with clean design in a way that honors both the client’s personal identity and global design narratives.
Conclusion: An Artistic Reflection of Life and Lifestyle
This project is not just a home—it’s a manifestation of the client’s personality, passions, and values, woven through an architectural language of abstraction, culture, and comfort. Mondrian’s influence is evident not just in form or colour but in the very ethos of the design—order, rhythm, and harmony.
A little Mondrian flavour, indeed, never goes wrong.
