The flat is in an existing high-rise building from the 1970s, in the center of East-Berlin.

The structure of the building is a reinforced concrete frame construction with wide spans and without load-bearing interior walls. A typical floor plan of this period would have flats with dark corridors and a separate kitchen cell. The flat’s orientation to the south-west and north has two loggias along the entire length of the outer walls.

The basic idea of the project is to insert an L-shaped floor plan into the existing structure according to the spatial and programmatic character of the apartment, orientation, and loggias. The removal of partition walls to the kitchen, corridor and the former bedrooms creates the opportunity for a new spatial organization.

A large open communal space in the shape of an L inspired by Scandinavian floor plans is the core and public space of the apartment, to which the private rooms are attached laterally. The kitchen is in the center of the L, marking the two visual axes of the apartment, towards north tin the direction of the historic center of the city and towards south-west in the direction of the Grunewald.

A homogeneous flooring made of greige linoleum in all rooms underlines the horizontality and openness of the apartment, smooth, smoothed, white walls and the exposed concrete beams emphasize the construction of the building and make its structure visible.

Large sliding/folding doors made of oiled pinewood connect the more private rooms to the central common room, allowing them to expand into the collective space if needed.
