Archetype Distillery is a new neighborhood destination offering tastings, tours and a unique event and gallery space. The Design Team strived to evoke an emotional connection between patrons and the distilling process through materials. Implementing the design concept of “Elegant Industrial” by using steel, concrete, and brick alongside natural materials, rich textures and simple profiles that add the elegance. Contrasting the new space with existing features is predominantly achieved by bookending the space between exposed brick walls on the North and South sides, while the original trusses unify the space. Preexisting masonry walls were no longer adequate for new roof load requirements.
As a result, original trusses are supported by new paired columns strategically placed and detailed to be less obtrusive spanning both floors to support new roof load requirements. The decision was made to expose all systems, to achieve this flanges of beams were cut to allow for duct work to pass through at a desired height. By collaborating with product vendors, the desired elegance was achieved.For example, interior signage was made from real aluminum with hand finished paint and exposed fasteners. This subtle detail highlights the dedication to the “Elegant Industrial” style that was also invoked with casework, doors, window muntins and corrugated metal.
The “Elegant Industrial” design preserves the character of the original industrial structure while modern elements add elegance throughout. The authentic stills, Gracie and Marie, are featured in a 2-story volume lit from above by metal framed skylights, highlighting the process and providing natural light. A private stair with catwalk allows for ease of cleaning stills and offers a secondary private access to the owner’s office. The back-lit bar tops have full spectrum lighting and the tasting area showcases a bubble wall that is representative of the fermentation process. Custom metal arches inspired by the distillery logo are featured in upper and lower bar areas.
The ghosted “Archetype” stenciling on the wall above the distilling equipment is a nod to Colorado’s classic brick industrial past and provides an artistic backdrop to the upper floor event space. The distilling area and lobby with custom chandelier can be viewed from above offering multiple connections between floors. It is a flexible space that can handle private events while still operating as a distillery and tasting room, maintaining a feeling of openness throughout. The upper floor is programmed for private and public events; featuring its own bar, catering kitchen, and seating for over 200 in banquet or lecture style seating.
Archetype Distillery pays homage to the past while being designed for the future offering the neighborhood a community destination for socialization and entertainment, much like its historical beginnings as a theater.
