Artifact Coffee is a 2,000 sf café located in the boiler house of the historic Union Mill building in Baltimore’s Hampden-Woodberry neighborhood. The design emphasizes the historic structure of the space, including its stone walls and timber decking, beams, and trusses. The floor is stained exposed concrete except in the small lounge area where distressed hardwood flooring is used.
The café’s owner found and refurbished a variety of historic artifacts including lights, cabinets and wainscoting. Extra care was taken to optimize the number of customers who can be served with the use of a large refurbished gathering table in the main area and fold-down bars in the lounge area. The fold-down bars give the lounge space the flexibility to be used as a gathering space or as a simple space for relaxing and using laptops. Outside the café is one of Union Mill’s unique features, a large urban courtyard with an outdoor seating area provided for Artifact Coffee customers.
