The site for this residence commands spectacular views of the dramatic mountains of West Maui.

Stretched across a gently sloping hillside within a twenty-seven-acre farm, this residence is a direct response to its setting. Its spatially fluid interiors and large glass floor-to-ceiling windows and doors capture mountain and ocean views from three sides, while it presents a less permeable facade toward the prevailing winds from the northeast. The home is a series of spaces and experiences organized around a garden courtyard proportioned to the golden section. A breezeway wraps the courtyard and connects the main gathering spaces to the bedrooms and the garage.

The tropical modern architecture has low-slope roofs that open interior spaces to the exterior and views. Large eaves protect the interior from sun and rain. A second-story main bedroom cantilevers dramatically over a lanai and toward West Maui.

Building materials were selected for their connection to the island, their durability, and their contribution to the residence’s restrained aesthetic and refined character. Interior spaces are influenced by the exterior material palette. These spaces include rift-sawed white oak doors and trim; light gray, wide plank oak floors; blackened steel accents; and large basalt columns.
