Nestled within the warm landscape south of Bogotá, the Balmoral Event Hall emerges as a direct response to the environmental conditions of its setting. Located within a countryside hotel and surrounded by lush vegetation, the project occupies an expansive flat site characterized by seasonal flooding and the historical presence of watercourses. In response, the building is elevated above the natural ground level, separating itself from the terrain to ensure resilience while establishing a respectful relationship with the site's natural cycles.
The project is conceived as a large roof floating above the landscape. Beneath it, an open and flexible space accommodates a variety of social gatherings and events, allowing the program to adapt to multiple configurations. Rather than defining a fully enclosed room, the design seeks to create an open and permeable atmosphere where the boundaries between interior and exterior are constantly blurred.
Two stone volumes located at the north and south ends contain the service functions and act as anchoring elements within the overall composition. Between them, a lightweight structure composed of eight steel columns supports a large-span roof that appears to hover above the site. This structural strategy creates a continuous, unobstructed space, reinforcing the sense of openness and lightness that defines the building.
The roof plays a fundamental environmental role. Its generous overhangs protect the façades from solar exposure and heavy rainfall, while large operable glazed openings promote cross ventilation and maximize the use of natural climatic conditions. Through these passive strategies, the architecture reduces reliance on mechanical systems while enhancing thermal comfort for its users.
The material palette establishes a dialogue with the resources available in the region. Stone sourced from nearby quarries provides a sense of permanence and connection to the landscape, while bamboo introduces warmth and texture. In contrast, the steel structure expresses precision and lightness, making the building's constructive logic visible. Together, these materials create an architecture that balances tradition and contemporaneity, permanence and openness.
More than an event venue, the project is conceived as a platform for gathering. A flexible space capable of accommodating different uses and scales, where architecture acts as a mediator between people, landscape, and the climatic conditions that shape the identity of the place.
