Located within CP67 Mall in Mohali, the BIRA 91 Taproom is conceived as an immersive hospitality environment that translates the brand’s youthful and experimental character into a spatial language of industrial expression, material contrast, and biophilic layering.
The design works within the existing commercial shell, retaining and exposing structural and service elements rather than concealing them. Concrete textures, exposed ducting, red sprinkler lines, metal surfaces, and brick cladding establish an industrial framework, while vegetation and warm metallic finishes introduce softness and visual depth.
At the heart of the taproom, a double-height bar establishes the primary spatial anchor. Copper-finished pipes descend from the exposed ceiling above the counter, referencing the brewing process while emphasizing the vertical volume of the space. The bar functions simultaneously as a service element, visual landmark, and social spine around which the interior is organized. The BIRA 91 identity is integrated directly into the bar through a precisely cut logo, allowing branding to become part of the architectural detailing rather than an applied graphic element.
The existing structural columns are reinterpreted as prominent architectural features. Finished in an emerald tone and wrapped with perforated brass-finished metal sheets, the two columns introduce a distinctive material layer while retaining their structural presence. Their perforated surfaces create changing patterns of transparency and shadow as they interact with the surrounding lighting and movement.
Materiality plays a central role in defining the atmosphere. Three-dimensional brick cladding introduces texture across the walls, creating a dynamic relationship between light and shadow. The robust palette of concrete, brick, brass, and metal is contrasted with suspended planters and ceiling-mounted green trays. This layer of vegetation softens the industrial character and creates a visual continuity between the architectural interior and the natural landscape beyond.
At the entrance, suspended seating introduces a playful spatial element within the otherwise structured environment. Hanging from the ceiling, these seats create an immediate visual connection with the taproom’s experimental character while providing an alternative form of occupation within the compact footprint.
The boundary between the taproom and the mall concourse is treated as a permeable architectural layer. A glazed façade clad with wire mesh provides transparency while maintaining a sense of enclosure. The BIRA 91 logo is integrated into the mesh through cut-out detailing, allowing the brand identity to remain visible without relying on conventional signage. Beyond the façade, the adjoining green outdoor area becomes an extension of the interior experience, strengthening the relationship between the taproom and its surroundings.
The flooring introduces another layer of material expression. Broken tiles are arranged in a textured pattern that generates subtle colour and tonal variation while helping distinguish circulation and seating zones. Bar stools, booth seating, and suspended furniture create a range of spatial conditions within the relatively compact footprint, allowing the interior to accommodate both individual and social experiences.
Rather than treating the taproom as a conventional branded hospitality outlet, the design positions it as a spatial extension of BIRA 91’s identity. Industrial infrastructure, crafted materials, integrated branding, and vegetation are brought together as a layered interior system. The resulting environment balances the rawness of exposed construction with the warmth of greenery and tactile surfaces, creating a contemporary social space that remains visually connected to both the brand and its surrounding context.
