The Black Ember Residence in Baabdat, Lebanon, is conceived as a home that dissolves the boundary between building and terrain. Designed by Lebanese practice Akl Architects, it merges with its mountainous site. Embedded within the natural slope, the residence follows the contours of the land to minimise disruption and maximise connection with the landscape.
Integration with site
The design is informed by the geometry of Lebanon’s mountain ridges, where projected diagonals shape the walls and openings. These orientations direct views toward the south-east, framing expansive vistas while maintaining privacy from neighbouring properties. The U-shaped configuration defines a central inner garden that links the home’s two primary wings. One side opens to the mountains, while the other faces the access road, with circulation weaving between interior and exterior space.
Spatial organisation and material expression
At the centre of the home is an open-air patio: a planted courtyard that acts as a light well, microclimate regulator, and visual focal point. This internal garden brings the landscape inward, allowing cross-ventilation and natural light to reach all primary spaces. Frameless glass openings further dissolve enclosure, creating transitions between living areas, terraces, and the surrounding terrain.
Duality of materials
The residence expresses a clear material duality. A black stone envelope grounds the building within its site, providing thermal mass and a visual connection to the dark basalt typical of the region. By contrast, interior finishes use natural oak and light plaster to introduce warmth and tactility. Structural elements in steel and glass allow transparency and continuity of sightlines, balancing solidity with openness.
Environmental Design Strategies
The project prioritises passive strategies to achieve comfort and efficiency with minimal mechanical intervention. The architecture itself acts as the primary environmental system, beginning with an optimised orientation that captures winter sunlight while minimising summer heat gain. Cross ventilation is achieved through dual-aspect openings and the central courtyard, allowing fresh air to circulate naturally and reducing reliance on artificial cooling. Daylighting is moderated through frameless openings that balance brightness with glare reduction. Material choices reinforce this approach: the black stone envelope provides thermal mass and insulation, while locally sourced materials such as timber and natural plaster reduce embodied carbon and support regional craftsmanship.
