This house is located on a small trapezoidal plot, set within a wooded environment. The rear façade benefits from a southern orientation. However, the existing veranda was completely disconnected from the rest of the house. Its dimensions and proportions made it difficult to use as a functional living space. Beyond that, the house as a whole required a complete renovation: the existing kitchen was outdated and very small, and the overall layout no longer met the needs of a modern family. The aim of the project was therefore to reconfigure the interior to suit the family’s lifestyle and give the home a more contemporary character. To achieve this, the veranda was demolished and replaced by a new rear extension.

The extension is composed of two volumes forming an “L”. This layout allows the living room to open onto two façades, framing the best views of the landscape, creates a terrace with optimal sun exposure, adds depth to the house, and distributes the interior spaces harmoniously. The new living room occupies the taller volume of the extension, characterized by generous ceiling heights and large openings to the exterior. The room itself has a square plan, a deliberate choice that conveys a sense of balance, stability, and grounding. Overhanging roofs provide a sense of protection and comfort while preventing overheating. In the lower volume, the dining room is extended, and the kitchen has been relocated to the front façade, working in close relation with the dining area. Together, these two spaces form an elongated rectangle defined by a striking central island measuring 3.8 meters, further accentuating the sense of depth. A new side opening brings additional light above the kitchen workspace.

The interior atmosphere was conceived to be as warm and welcoming as possible. Exposed timber beams of the flat roof were preserved to add character, while natural-looking materials such as concrete and terrazzo were chosen for the flooring. On the exterior, the façades of the new extension are finished with a textured plaster resembling raw concrete. This treatment reinforces the “brutalist” identity of the project and ensures coherence between the interior’s material palette and the architectural expression of the extension.
