EBBA unveils renovation of sunsoaked terraced residence in London’s Camden: A contemporary oasis harmonising indoor and outdoor living
Award-winning architecture and design studio EBBA is pleased to announce the completion of a unique renovation of a traditional terraced house in London’s Camden, combining contemporary innovation and the storied charm of London’s architectural vernacular.
With no prior restoration work completed since the client purchased the house fifteen years prior, EBBA’s comprehensive renovation concentrated on connecting the different pockets of space in the house to create a more cohesive living area, whilst opening up the rear of the building to embrace the available natural light. The studio also carved out a dedicated office space that seamlessly connects to the garden.
Harmonising with the existing architecture and taking cues from the metalwork of Victorian balconies common to terraced houses of this era, EBBA created a full-width double-height extension, sympathetically placed between two existing structures. The extension transforms what was once an exterior view from the living room into a standout interior feature - connecting the two levels of the house whilst skillfully framing the garden view.
The deliberately delicate architecture of the extension offers a simultaneously bold yet subtle expression, softening the line between the indoors and outdoors by enhancing the relationship between the interior and the abundant treeline of the surrounding garden.
The new double-height void space created by the extension floods the house with natural light whilst connecting the ground floor with the living room and study; and the garden, once glimpsed through a small kitchen window, is now fully embraced throughout the home, with large opening doors revealing a brick-lined terrace.
Bespoke joinery was designed and crafted for each function within the house, from a sprawling freestanding central island in the kitchen to a lineup of custom pieces in the bedroom and master ensuite. A traditional Japanese bath, positioned in the center of the master ensuite, creates a focal point enhanced further by the softly textured clay walls, offering a serene space of respite.
EBBA opted for a quiet, sustainable material palette as timber joinery takes centre stage whilst off-white clay tiles line the floors of the new kitchen and limestone accents add to the sunsoaked atmosphere of the residence. Dark joinery works as a point of contrast, carving out intimate backdrops to the activities of the home.
Offering a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living, the reimagined Camden residence exemplifies EBBA’s ongoing commitment to creating thoughtful and ambitious spaces through sustainable means.
