Carvalheiras

The Carvalheiras Project is a rehabilitation initiative that aims to combine two adjacent buildings situated on Carvalheiras Street, with an east/west orientation. The building was in advanced state of degradation, which accelerated the deterioration of the structure and worsened the living conditions.

Considering this context, a meticulous rehabilitation and expansion were undertaken to provide the buildings with improved health, safety, and accessibility conditions, meeting the current comfort standards. The main focus of the intervention was to preserve and reconstruct the existing architectural relationships and features, typical of Porto. The proposed expansion aimed to harmonize with the existing construction and its surroundings by respecting the composition of the openings.

In terms of design, the proposal involves rehabilitating the original materials, such as yellow granite and stonework, wooden window frames, and the traditional wooden roof. The rear facade received the same finishes as the main facade, including painted metal guards and modified proportions for the openings.

The gabled roof was constructed using a wooden framework and incorporates four rectangular skylights. It is covered with ceramic tiles that match the existing ones.

Functionally, the objective was to maintain residential use while reducing the building's footprint, allowing for the creation of a permeable courtyard area to enhance sanitary conditions. The proposal includes the development of eight housing units, comprising T0, T1, and T1+1 typologies, distributed across the first, second, and third floors, as well as the attic.
