On a narrow hillside plot in Berneck, the contemporary new building replaces an existing single-family house. The plinth level, embedded into the slope, forms a solid base, while the timber element structure placed above, with its pitched roof, integrates harmoniously into the surrounding built fabric.
The architectural design combines functionality and aesthetics, making skilful use of the sloping site. The pitched roof extends laterally down to the ground, enclosing the living space and forming a kind of “tube,” thereby creating a unique spatial experience of two opposing views: towards the village on one side and towards the slope in the opposite direction.
From the entrance door, an exposed concrete wall leads to the staircase, guiding visitors to the upper living and sleeping levels. Throughout, residents are continuously offered the opportunity to experience these two contrasting orientations: the extroverted view towards the village and the more introverted outlook towards the foot of the slope.
