Unlike in the past when most people thought of dogs at the mention of pets, many have begun to keep cats. Cats are loved by many for their unique and charming individuality that is contrary to the naive and obedient personality of a dog. However, the problem is that interacting with cats as an onlooker and raising them yourself are two completely different stories. Charmed by the cuteness of cats without knowing this fact, people who adopt cats at a spur of the moment often find themselves disappointed upon realization that their cat's behavior is different from what they expected and they end up giving their cat away or abandoning it.
Come Amico highlights these problems and help care for the trauma experienced by abandoned cats. ‘Seeking the meaning of existence by warmly embracing life.’ This slogan indicates the direction in which Come Amico pursues. In line with it, the client respects life and wishes to convey her absolute love for it. Putting this spirit into practice, a portion of the profits generated through the sale of paintings and goods are used to help abandoned cats.
Seeing the client's love for cats and understandingher wish for a warm and comfortable place that allows cats to roam freely, EVBR Studio attempted to reproduce this feeling in its design of the space, using the feeling as a design motif. After much deliberation, the keyword ‘Studio’ was derived from an image of the client drawing a cat. Imagining a cat walking and playing in the studio, EVBR Studio created a story that can be told through this space.
The story was written at Come Amico located at the end of Yeonnam-dong in Seongsan-dong, which is also known as Kkeutnam-dong. The overall space of Come Amico boasts natural warmth given off by wood-tone veneer walls and wooden flooring. Here, a fabric reminding one of a cat is added to accentuate the mood of a warm studio space.
An interesting point is that the cat's movements are interpreted and expressed as a single element across the space. There is a mirror standing on one side of the studio. Both the frame and the mirror have been constructed in an irregular shape. It represents the form of water spilled by playful cats, and functions as both a mirror and an art object. On the other side, Come Amico's products are displayed on a shelf made of fabric. Akin to a cat tower, this shelf adds warmth and wit to the space while reflecting the client's affection and love for cats.
