The Parlevinkerplein in Amsterdam-Noord will have a new cultural center for the Banne-Noord district. The center features a theater hall, various activity rooms and a large meeting room on the ground floor and a breeding ground for artists on the upper floors. The municipality of Amsterdam Art & Culture is the client for the cultural part, the Buurtcentra Foundation is the client for the breeding ground. Rochdale is delegated developer.
NEXT's design is based on an open structure in which connection is central, a robust framework that is flexible and multifunctional. The architecture connects the square and activity spaces and an urban veranda on the first floor forms a continuity of the public domain. Shed roofs give the volume a striking contour.
On the 650 m2 ground floor of the building there will be a workshop or activity room, catering and cultural hall, where concerts and theater performances can be given. The first and second floors house a breeding ground of studios. In short, a collective building, with many disciplines and functions that will contribute to a cultural and social meaning for the users and residents of the district.
The ground floor of the culture center has an accessible character with an open appearance and is intended for everyone from Banne-Noord and the surrounding area. Art, culture and encounters are central here. This way everyone from the neighborhood can get to know each other. Collaborating, generating ideas and developing them increases solidarity in the neighborhood. An important function where residents and interested parties can develop, create, rehearse and perform freely together and learn with and from each other. A breeding ground for art and culture for both creative amateurish and professional makers.
The cultural center is part of a new residential area to be developed around the Parlevinkerplein, an urban development plan by SVP urban development and architecture. They also design the 105 social rental homes in Rochdale in the building block of which the cultural center is part.
