The former School of fishery (De Visserijschool) in Katwijk has been redeveloped into 11 owner-occupied appartements. Next to the former school, a new apartment building with 21 social housing apartments has been designed. The new design carefully interacts with the existing context such as the different angels of the urban fabric, and the privacy of the surrounding houses.

Building with historic significance.

The Visserijschool was once considered the most modern school of fishery of the Netherlands. During nearly 60 years it became a well known building in the collective memory of Katwijk as many youngsters from Katwijk were educated in fishery and maritime skills there. In 2011 the school relocated to a different location, raising the question of the future use of the building. After many different ideas, from complete demolishment to redevelopment as restaurant or office building, it was finally decided to renovate and redevelope the building for apartments.

Contrast and Connection.

Adjacent to the former school, a contemporary addition has been designed, that creates a sensible connection with the existing school building, without copying architectural style. The white masonry and the non-orthogonal angles of the Visserijschool can also be found in the new apartment building. As a white ensemble the buidlings stand out from the surrounding houses in red masonry. Together with Villa Allegonda, which is also white, both of the most important corners on the street ‘Rijnmond’ are accentuated.

The new social housing apartments provide in much needed affordable, modern apartments in Katwijk aan Zee. Apart form the 75m2 sized appartement units, the inhabitants can enjoy a great view on the dunes and a short walk to the sea. The former school building has been renovated carefully. The previously demolished ship’s mast and radio antenna on the tower of the former school have been rebuild. The old classrooms have been transformed into modern apartments and although the scent of fish, nets, and motor oil are gone, the atmosphere is still there.
