Delaware State University

In 2005, Delaware State University developed a 10-year Master Plan that included the transformation of a parking lot and a series of low buildings on campus into a new student destination. Holzman Moss Bottino Architecture was selected to design the new “Student Life Quad”, composed of three separate building projects, including a Student Center, that surround an exterior intramural courtyard. Early on in the project, a “Green Summit” was held to ensure that these buildings would provide a healthy environment that was financially and ecologically conscious. We designed a Student Center that serves as Delaware State University’s new signature gateway building and represents the university’s aspirations to strengthen school spirit and foster a distinct student culture. Arranged into three volumes, the three-story campus brick-clad building is identified by an undulating wall visible from the main approach to campus; the double-height glass curtain wall-encased student lounge also serves as the building entry; and the stone tower, clad in locally-quarried sandstone, anchors the Student Center on the main campus quad.
