The four-story apartment building is thoughtfully integrated between two existing structures on Eindhovenseweg in Waalre.
Driven by zoning regulations that dictated the scale and density, our design approach focused on creating a building that fits harmoniously within its context. The structure is composed of three brick-clad floors, crowned by an additional fourth floor set back behind a gently sloped zinc roof, punctuated by dormer windows that add character and scale to the silhouette.
The brick façade is divided into a clear 3-by-3 grid, with recessed infill panels that provide tactile depth and a dynamic play of light and shadow. One of these nine grid sections serves as the main passageway, offering a covered entrance that leads residents and visitors into a courtyard where parking facilities are discreetly located.
Inside, the building accommodates 11 apartments designed for comfort and connection to the surroundings. Floor-to-ceiling windows open up to French balconies, flooding the interiors with natural light and providing visual and physical links to the outdoor environment. This transparency is carefully balanced with privacy through a simple yet playful arrangement of open and closed façade elements, which creates a rhythmic dialogue across the building’s face.
The overall architectural expression is modest and restrained, rooted in classical design principles but enlivened by contemporary detailing and meticulous craftsmanship. The building respects its neighbors and the neighborhood scale, while offering a fresh interpretation of residential living that combines elegance with functionality.
