D.UNG HOUSE

DUNG HOUSE is situated in a newly developed urban area of Dong Hoi City, Quang Binh Province (under its former name), a district with clear planning that distinguishes it from the spontaneous residential areas of the past. The plot is located with its back and two sides facing the somewhat chaotic old town, while the front opens toward a riverside park. For this reason, during the design process we focused on ensuring privacy at the rear while maximizing the Southeast-facing view toward the Cau Rao River.

By enclosing the rear to shield from noise and opening the front to welcome fresh natural air, the architects adopted a minimalist architectural form. The design is structured around a box-like volume, where stacked floor plates are combined with open voids oriented toward the river.

Due to the limited land area, the project redefined circulation and functionality to better align with its surroundings. Nearly 80% of the ground floor is devoted to landscaping and open spaces, accommodating everyday family activities such as parking, outdoor gatherings, and play areas for children.

The main living space is located on the second floor, placed on a moderately raised slab for greater convenience and to reduce unnecessary movement.

The private areas for family members are arranged on the third floor. Although vertical circulation may appear somewhat complex, the use of natural light to expand spaces horizontally while compressing them vertically gives the house the appearance of a two-story structure, creating a more harmonious presence within the neighborhood.

Despite its modest scale, the project integrates multiple functions with nature in a flexible way. Every space maintains a direct relationship with the natural environment, helping residents feel more comfortable and connected to their surroundings.

Special attention is given to natural ventilation: fresh air flows in from the front and exits through a skylight at the rear, balancing indoor temperature while effectively reducing industrial energy use.

The floors gradually extend outward along the vertical axis, acting like traditional eaves. This not only limits direct sunlight from entering the living spaces but also allows daylight to reach the small gardens on the ground level, supporting natural plant growth.
