The Dutch Canyon Home rests gently in the corner of Heber Valley in Midway, Utah with a backyard opening up to the foothills of Wasatch State Park. With Park City and Deer Valley Resort just over the ridgeline, abundant access to hiking, biking and backcountry trails make this location an enviable location for a family home in the heart of the Wasatch Back.

The architectural team drew upon vernacular typologies of local barns and agricultural buildings, while incorporating a modern vocabulary of materials and details. The home was designed as a series of simple gable forms with wood cladding and cabin pavilions that intersect and are connected by transitional spaces. It was important to the homeowners and their eight children that the spaces function for active family life with no hallways and corridors between the kitchen, living, and dining areas. These spaces capture mountain and canyon views through courtyards and screened porches. The home provides spaces for the activities and lifestyle of the family and includes a craft room off the kitchen, an indoor basketball court connected to the home but in a separate building designed in a barn style, a basement home theater, and a pool with a simple modern pool house.

The primary suite provides an elegant retreat from the rest of the home with a slatted-screen porch just off the bedroom, creating an intimate alcove where the occupants can hear the white noise of the adjacent stream. The interior design was led by the homeowner herself with furnishings that are modern, yet plush and inviting. No part of the home feels untouchable, but rather welcomes you to engage with the space at every turn. As a whole, the interior of the home captures the warmth of a family-centered way of life.
