East Kowloon Cultural Centre will provide a 1200-seat grand theatre, a 550-seat medium theatre, a 250-seat black box theatre, exhibition venues, a 120-seat music lab and other supporting ancillary culture facilities.
Rather than an isolated monument, the design of EKCC will be highly permeable and knits together the hitherto disjointed urban neighborhoods, including the regional MTR elevated concourse on one side and the buzzling colourful old city of Kwun Tong on the other.
By intentionally bringing daily commuters through the Centre via a public route that intertwines but does not conflict with the activities of event users, the EKCC will help to eliminate the psychological and temperamental gap between cultural elites and the general public. More importantly it will help sustain energy and vitality in an otherwise aloof cultural venue, through an enhanced urban connectivity mapped onto the building in manners both physical and spiritual.
