The FHNW Campus Dreispitz provides a new home for the FHNW School of Business and School of Computer Science. Based on the original architectural design by E2A, Evolution Design was commissioned to review and further develop the interior concept before construction. Responding to shifts towards collaborative and project-based education, the campus is conceived as an interconnected environment rather than a collection of conventional classrooms. Learning spaces are combined with co-working areas, focus zones, informal lounges, and coffee points, allowing students to move between group work, individual study, and informal exchange throughout the day.

Shared and adaptable spaces

At ground level, the Welcome Center, event space, and campus restaurant provide shared meeting points for students, staff, and visitors while connecting the university with Basel’s wider business community.

Upper floors combine offices with meeting and workshop spaces, laboratories, and shared coffee hubs. This mix supports interaction between different teams and disciplines while allowing spaces to accommodate multiple activities. By providing a range of settings rather than assigning each function to a single spatial type, the design allows the campus to be used more flexibly.

Extending learning outdoors

An extensively planted, covered terrace extends the co-working and lounge environment outdoors. Integrated power connections allow students and staff to work outside, while strategically positioned shading limits direct solar exposure during warmer periods.

The terrace adds usable learning and social space without replicating an enclosed, mechanically conditioned interior environment. Planting, shade, and access to outdoor space also contribute to occupant well-being.
