The Alpine landscape of Comelico is characterized by a balance between natural components and the result of a long process of human intervention that has shaped the territory over time. Within this context lies the project for the restoration of a disused rural building located on the outskirts of the village of Casamazzagno.

Agricultural settlements, distributed along the slopes and on the terraces most suitable for cultivation, form a widespread system of structures that reflects an established relationship between productive activities, soil morphology, and landscape organization. The building involved in the intervention belongs to the typology of haylofts—structures traditionally used for housing animals and storing hay—characterized by the combined use of stone for the base and wood for the upper levels.

The building is organized over several levels: a stone masonry base, originally used as a stable and agricultural storage area, and an upper volume with a timber structure enclosed by wooden boarding, used as a hay storage space. Over time, the building underwent some alterations and the addition of small auxiliary volumes that partially modified its original configuration.

The restoration project is based on a conservative approach aimed at restoring the original volume and construction characteristics of the building. Later additions are removed to re-establish the original configuration, while the existing wooden and masonry structures are preserved and consolidated.

The intervention includes the introduction of new functions compatible with the existing structure. On the ground floor, a living area with a living room and kitchen is organized, alongside a bathroom with an anteroom, while the lower floor retains its function as a rustic annex and storage space. The upper spaces preserve the spatial logic of the hayloft, maintaining the visibility of the original timber structure and its relationship with the external balcony.

Structural upgrading and improved energy performance are achieved through the insertion of a new internal load-bearing structure and an insulation system placed on the inner side of the perimeter walls. This solution allows intervention on the building organism without modifying the external envelope and without altering the perception of the building within the landscape context.

The existing openings are maintained and integrated by working with the rhythm of the wooden boarding on the façades: some sections become operable to ensure ventilation and natural lighting, while the glazed surfaces are set back from the external plane and remain imperceptible when the shutters are closed.

The intervention therefore preserves the building’s shape, materials, and overall image, restoring the legibility of the original hayloft structure and maintaining its presence within the rural landscape of Comelico.
