In 2022, Studio Lauria took part in the competition for the restoration and redevelopment of Florence’s Artemio Franchi Stadium as part of the team led by Kengo Kuma & Associates. The project addressed the recovery of Pier Luigi Nervi’s work, the creation of a contemporary stadium for approximately 40,000 spectators and the urban transformation of the Campo di Marte area

The proposal began with a clear decision: to place the new stadium entirely within the existing structure, fully preserving the principal historic elements and the architectural value of Nervi’s design. The goal was not to place a new volume beside the monument, but to create a system capable of integrating restoration, comfort, safety and new ways of using the facility.

The design was characterised by the lightness of the roof and cladding, the dynamism of its forms and the inclusion of panoramic routes. The new structures established a respectful relationship with the existing fabric, making the different periods clearly recognisable while maintaining a unified image.

Outside, the redevelopment proposed a major urban park planted with species native to the region and connected to the surrounding neighbourhoods. The stadium was therefore interpreted not only as sports infrastructure, but as accessible public space available throughout the week. The proposal received second prize.
